Doug’s Acceptance Remarks
I would like to thank the
nominating committee and indeed the entire squadron
membership for their confidence in me. While I didn’t
actively seek this position, I am very honored to be
selected as your Commander. I pledge that I will work
relentlessly to promote the best interests of Brentwood
Bay Squadron and its members. In my mind there are two
primary reasons we exist. First, we are a teaching
organization providing boaters with the skills and
knowledge they need to be safe. Secondly, we are a
social organization providing our membership with
opportunities for fun, fellowship and camaraderie
revolving around the favorite pastime we all share.
These form the framework for my vision of the future of
the squadron.
Past Commander Len Burton
has done an outstanding job during his three terms. With
input from his bridge and squadron membership, he has
charted the course to achieve our goals. With a steady
hand at the helm, he has guided the squadron to exciting
new harbors many of which were not visible over the
horizon as we started our voyage. As he hands over
the helm, I ask you to look with me once again to the
horizon. What course should we take? What shoals do we
need to avoid? What destinations do we want to ensure
we visit? It is a shared responsibility; we are all on
this voyage together.
To my Bridge, thank you
for stepping forward to serve in your positions. Over my
time as XO Len so often said to me “We have a great
bridge!” and I fully concur. I look forward to working
with you and enjoying your energy and commitment to your
roles. To the entire membership my message is - This is
your Squadron, get involved! Come proctor a student,
teach a lesson, submit an article to the Bearing.
Not up to assuming a bridge position? That’s fine, there
are lots of opportunities to help out officers with
their duties thereby lightening everyone’s the load.
Believe me when you volunteer you’ll be amazed by how
much you get in return.
Let’s all be advocates for
Brentwood Bay Power and Sail Squadron. Fly the burgee
and the CPS flag proudly. Tell people what they stand
for and how much you are enjoying the experience of
membership. What if we all made a commitment to find
one new member for the Squadron this year? If you have
an idea or feel we are off course tell any bridge
member. We value and will respond to your input.
Remember,.... drifting, letting
the wind and current push us backward is not an option.
Together we can keep our squadron moving forward to new
and exciting destinations.
