Len Burton’s career at sea spans
more than 40 years, variously with the Royal Canadian
Navy, the B.C. logging industry British Columbia Forrest
Products, Canadian Coast Guard, B.C. Ferries, Canadian Hydrographic Service offshore research, the towboat
Industry and with B.C. Coast Steamships.
He has worked with heavy duty
machinery and log loading equipment. In marine search
and rescue, rose to rank of Marine Chief Engineer, was a
Senior Engineering Officer, and with B.C. Coast
Steamships was responsible for all onboard machinery,
maintenance and repair of main propulsion, mechanical
and auxiliary systems.
A strong proponent of safety at
sea, Len naturally gravitated to volunteer with the
Canadian Power Squadron, instructing in boating safety,
the CPS Boating Course, Maritime radio and Marine
Maintenance.
He is currently Commander of
Brentwood Bay Squadron and is MAREP officer for the
squadron, the Vancouver Island South District, and
Regional Coordinator Pacific Region. He has made
significant progress in reviving and further developing
this program, dedicated to discovering and identifying
navigational threats such as buoys out of position,
shipwrecks, abandoned boats or uncharted rocks.
Len also holds Certificates of
Competency in Canadian Steamship Inspection Services and
Marine Engineering. He has studied steamship Inspection
(Camosun College, Victoria) and has since been further
accredited by the British Columbia Institute of
Technology. He holds an Industrial First Aid
Certificate, Shipboard Fire Fighting and Damage Control
Certificate (Nuclear Biological Chemical Defence, Fleet
School, H.M.C.S Naden ) and is certified by Industry
Canada to teach ROCM/VHF Radio and PCOC courses for
Canadian Power Squadron.
